Nullarbor and Yellabinna and Warna Manda Parks Draft Management Plans

on .

HCP-Front-coverA management plan for the Nullarbor Parks was being developed by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR), in conjunction with the Nullarbor Parks Advisory Committee. Similarly, a management plan was being developed for the Yellabinna and Warna Manda Parks in conjunction with the Yumbarra Conservation Park Co-management Board. Both plans were developed using the Far West Coast Healthy Country Plan as a basis.
We commended this approach to plan development, where Far West Coast Aboriginal people's knowledge and aspirations are central. We commented that the implementation of these plans is critical and that establishing and supporting Indigenous ranger groups may be one way of facilitating implementation, where this aligns with the aspirations of Far West Coast Aboriginal people.

Our primary concern was how compliance with these policies will be monitored, and suggested that each policy be amended to include this information.

Leading Practice Mining Review - Recommendations to date

on .

In September 2017, 82 recommendations from the Leading Practice Mining Review were released based on progress to date, and our comments were sought. We cautiously welcomed the recommendations related to environmental protection, particularly those designed to ensure the rehabilitation of land impacted by mining and those to increase transparency and the provision of publicly available information on mining activities. We remain concerned, however, about the need for native vegetation to be properly protected from clearance associated with mining or exploration activity.
